Rijeka Crnojevića: The Prettiest Bend on Skadar Lake

Rijeka Crnojevića: The Prettiest Bend on Skadar Lake

Rijeka Crnojevića is a sleepy village where a river of the same name loops through reed beds in a near-perfect horseshoe before feeding into Skadar Lake. The viewpoint above it, Pavlova Strana, is one of the defining images of Montenegro.

The Pavlova Strana viewpoint

From the road between Cetinje and the village, a marked viewpoint looks down on the great green meander of the river. Morning light and the low autumn sun are kindest for photographs. It is a quick stop but an unforgettable one.

Boat trips on the river

From the village's old stone bridge, small boats run gentle cruises along the river and out into the open water of Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans. You glide past lily fields and reed banks where herons, cormorants and, if you are lucky, Dalmatian pelicans feed.

Pairing it with wine country

The Skadar basin is also Montenegro's wine country, home to the indigenous Vranac red and Krstač white. Many lake trips combine a boat ride with a tasting at a family vineyard, which makes for a relaxed, scenic day away from the coast.
