Bird Watching on Skadar Lake: Pelicans, Herons & More
Straddling the border with Albania, Skadar Lake is the largest lake in the Balkans and one of the most important bird habitats in Europe, with over 280 recorded species. For birdwatchers it is the highlight of inland Montenegro.
The star: the Dalmatian pelican
Skadar is one of the last strongholds of the Dalmatian pelican, a huge, curly-crested bird with a wingspan approaching three metres. The lake also hosts pygmy cormorants, glossy ibis, herons and, in the reed channels, a constant chorus of warblers.
When to go
Spring (April to June) is best for breeding activity and birdsong, while autumn brings migrating flocks. Early morning, when the water is mirror-calm, gives the best sightings and the most magical light.
Taking a boat trip
Quiet boats set out from villages like Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića into the lily-covered channels. A local skipper knows where the pelicans feed and how close to approach without disturbing them. Bring binoculars and a zoom lens.
