Bar, on Montenegro's southern coast, is the country's main port and ferry link to Italy, but its real draw for visitors is Stari Bar, an atmospheric ruined old town set inland beneath the mountains.

Four kilometres from the modern town, Stari Bar is a walled hilltop settlement abandoned after a 19th-century siege and earthquakes. You can wander its lanes, churches and aqueduct ruins, with sweeping views over a sea of olive groves to the coast.
The ancient olive of Mirovica
Just outside town stands the Stara Maslina, an olive tree estimated at over 2,000 years old, one of the oldest in the world and still bearing fruit. The surrounding groves are among the densest in the Mediterranean.
